Rowan Tree
a cycle of anthems for Holy Week
Frederick Frahm's Rowan Tree includes five anthems for organ and voices that contemplate specific days in Holy Week culminating with a setting for Easter: Spy Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and the Feast of the Resurrection.
The composer draws on the works of Richard Aldington, Eva Gore-Booth, and Alfred Kreymborg (from the 20th century); and from 17th century mystic Ralph Knevet. Each setting features music for solo voice or mixed chorus. The organ part is substantial, a primus inter pares within the musical fabric.
