Huw Morgan

Founding Co-Director of Firehead Organ Works, Huw Morgan was born in 1975 in Newport, South Wales: he studied music at the University of Oxford, where he was organ scholar at St Edmund Hall, and choral conducting at the Royal Academy of Music, winning the Doreen Olwen Leyshon prize.

He is currently director of the Redland Green Choir and Clifton Singers in Bristol, and guest director of Weston Choral Society; previous posts include the Merbecke Choir of Southwark Cathedral, and organist of St Laurence Church, Catford.

Huw’s compositions have featured at the South Bank Centre, the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, the Canterbury Festival, the Bergen International Organ Festival, at Canterbury Cathedral and on Radio 3 and numerous CDs.

In 2013, with the organists Michael Bonaventure and Lauren Redhead, he founded Automatronic, a collective that seeks to promote, create, and perform new music for organ+electronics. Huw has also instituted a series of “mainly slow organ music” concerts in Bristol and further afield, with the aim of bringing new composers and audiences to the instrument.

In 2013 he recorded his debut solo CD Breaking Light, described as “sparkling” and “wonderfully atmospheric” in Church Music Quarterly (June 2014). In 2017, David Pipe has undertaken a recording surveying Huw’s organ music on a CD titled Invocations for the Meridian Records label – this was recorded at Bridlington Priory and is available through on this website.

Away from music, Huw is a keen photographer, rugby and cricket fan, and enjoys walking in the ancient landscapes of Britain. He lives in Bristol with his wife Emma and daughters Arwen and Aneira.
